Hi, my name is Farmer Jim. I've been a farming enthusiast for over 25 years, studying French Biointensive techniques of Alan Chadwick fame (father of the modern Organic movement) and directly from his primary student, Jean Jeavins, on his farm in Willits CA. I have also studied "Nutrient Dense" farming with Dan Kitteridge in Mass, learning about the importance of returning the vitamins and minerals to the soil to keep our nutritional content high in our food supply. A broad spectrum mineral mix is re-applied to the soil every Spring and Fall and soil testing along with leaf sap BRIX testing helps to inform on the health and vitality of what is both above and below the Earth surface.
I have recently spent the last 10 years studying a system of farming that is a bit far out... like cosmic man. Biodynamic Farming has been the term people refer to as the teachings of Rudolph Steiner in the early 20th century with regards to Agriculture. The Anthroposophy Society, of which Steiner was a cornerstone, was the marriage of spirituality and science, of the occult and the practical. At this point, I would expect a wry smile on the readers lips. But wait... this spiritual form of farming has been adopted by one of the most conservative, money oriented agricultural industries around, vinters (wine makers)! Why? Because it works, plain and simple. For close to a 100 years, people have been employing Biodynamic techniques and seeing miraculous results. It is a beautiful mystery; one that most biodyamic farmers are constantly exploring with enthusiastic interest and I am NO exception B-)
